Hedges provide a more natural-looking boundary than walls, fences, and other man-made structures. Anything worthwhile requires maintenance, which includes trimming hedges to keep them neat. Hedge trimming can range from once a year to three times a year, depending on the species and styling requirements. Trimming requires knowledge of what you’re doing because bare patches or too much trimming can be detrimental to the plant’s survival.
Conifers are the most commonly affected hedges by bare or brown patches. Depending on the weather in the UK, evergreens such as Yew, Lawson Cypress, Leyland Cypress, Laurel, Bay, Pyracanther, Box, Privet, and Holly can be trimmed all summer and into late September. Most conifers will not regrow if they are trimmed too severely, so use caution.
Deciduous hedges, such as Beech, Hawthorn, Hornbeam, and Hazel, are typically trimmed annually after flowering, which occurs between June and September.
